Monday Motivation from Cake

#PEIntensive16, entrepreneur, Monday Motivation

Monday’s can be rough, and sometimes, we could all use some motivation. That’s why we’re launching a #MondayMotivation blog series bringing you tips and life hacks from industry leaders and some of the most creative entrepreneurs out there.

Cake, one of our PE Class of 2016 pitch competition winners, is participating in Rent the Runway’s accelerator program this summer. What better way to start your week than with some motivation from Cake, one of the three winning teams from our NYC Weekend Intensive! We asked Cake co-founder Suelin Chen how she stays motivated – here’s what she shared:

What motivated you to make the leap to launch your own startup?

When I started talking about building an end-of-life planning business, even total strangers would spontaneously share their experiences with me.  I heard so many painful stories about what it’s like to lose someone who hasn’t done enough planning. I also heard so many joyful stories about people who had planned, and whose loved ones found comfort in knowing they had respected their loved ones’ wishes. These stories made me even more sure that I wanted to help empower people to plan.

What motivates you to keep going?

In my line of work, I’m constantly reminded of my own mortality. This is actually not depressing–quite the opposite!  Every day I remind myself that my time on this earth is precious and I’m so grateful for what I have. This positive urgency–a feeling of life being short–helps me stay super motivated to spend my time doing things I’m truly passionate about.

What do you do every Monday morning to prepare and motivate yourself for the coming week?

I try to make time to set intentions for the day and meditate every morning, but especially on Mondays.  One of my favorite questions to answer in the morning: “What would make today great?”
